Recycling your old Computer
Posted on 27th June 2008 by DaniCategories: Recycling
Getting a new computer can be so exciting and with the continual advancement of technology, getting a new computer every couple of years has become the norm for many people. But what do you do with your old computer? The vast majority of consumer electronics contain hazardous materials including cadium and lead and when disposed or incinerated can contaminate our air and soil. 1 Here are a few simple things you can do with your old computer…
Recycle It!
Of course! Recycling is the obvious choice. Just be sure and completely erase your harddrive with a program like Eraser so you don’t compromise any confidential information. To find a place to recycle your computer or “e-waste” start with E-cycling Central’s database of recycling centers or you can look in our recycling directory to find an e-waste recycling center. Office Depot recycles e-waste also.
Return It!
Some manufacturers such as Dell and Gateway will allow you to return your old computer. Check with your computers manufacturer to see if such a policy is offered. They may charge a fee for the return.
Here are the links to a few manufacturers return policies:

- Gateway Trade-In Program
- HP Trade-In Program
- TigerDirect Recycle/Trade-In Program
Donate It!
“One man’s trash is another’s treasure…” Donate your old PC to someone who will appreciate it! From schools to senior centers there are many options when it comes to donating your e-waste and it will usually qualify for a tax deduction as well (make sure you donate to a true “non-profit” for the tax deduction). Donating your computer works best if you donate it to a nonprofit or school-based refurbisher rather than directly to a charity or school, especially if you need to wipe your hard drive or if you’re unsure about your equipment’s condition. 2
Here are a few places to get you started:
- Free Geek
- Techsoup’s Database of Recyclers and Refurbishers
- Share the Technology

Resell It!
ebay is the best option when it comes to selling your old machine. You can also try places such as UsedComputer.com to find a buyer, but don’t expect to make a fortune!
Get Creative
Do you have a younger family member that could benefit from an internet connection? Or maybe you need a place to store and play your music files? There are many creative ways in which you could put your old pc to use. Have a laptop? Install Yahoo widgets and use it as a portable weather station.

Whatever you decide to do with your old computer just remember to erase your hard drive and don’t leave any cds, dvds, or other removable devices inside it. If all else fails try a place like Freecycle or Gigoit.
